A law student who is looking at about $1000 to spend for rent at a suitable apartment that’s affordable, and with respectable distance to the campus.

Well, if you want to be within walking distance of campus, be prepared to use every cent of that budget; Foggy Bottom is not cheap, and the surrounding neighborhoods (Georgetown, Dupont, etc.) are worse. Consider Northern Virginia neighborhoods along the Orange Line (Rosslyn, Clarendon, etc.) if you’re looking to save money and not have a terrible commute to campus.
