WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has requested a new lawyer to represent him in Sweden after a prosecutor decided to reopen a rape investigation against him.

STOCKHOLM – WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has requested a new lawyer to represent him in Sweden after a prosecutor decided to reopen a rape investigation against him.

In a note to the Stockholm district court Tuesday a representative of Assange wrote he is not satisfied with prominent Swedish lawyer Leif Silbersky and wants Bjorn Hurtig instead.

The note said Silbersky hasn’t been sufficiently engaged enough in the case.

A senior prosecutor reopened a rape investigation last week against the founder of the whistle-blower web site because of allegations from two Swedish women.

Assange denies the claims, suggesting they are part of a smear campaign by opponents of WikiLeaks, which has angered Washington by publishing thousands of leaked U.S. military documents.

The former lawyer for Al Gore’s sexual assault accuser is disputing a significant detail in the Oregon police report on the alleged groping.

Randall Vogt, a Portland attorney who represented massage therapist Molly Hagerty in 2006 and 2007 — when she sought a criminal investigation into her claims that Gore fondled her during a massage in his hotel room — says he never contacted the FBI or Secret Service about Hagerty’s claims.

According to a 2007 police report, Vogt — whose name is redacted in the publicly released documents — first approached the Portland Police Bureau in December 2006 after he’d “contacted the U.S. Secret Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Oregon State Police in an attempt to have a larger law enforcement agency investigate this case.” He turned to the Portland police, the report says, only after the other agencies all declined to look into the charges.

But that’s not true, according to Vogt. “I don’t recall contacting the FBI, and I don’t recall telling the police that I did,” he told Yahoo! News. “That’s simply wrong. I did call the Oregon State Police first, because I thought that they would view it less as a political event. But I never called the FBI or Secret Service. That’s just a mistake.”

We contacted Vogt after the FBI, in response to our Freedom of Information Act request, claimed to have no record of anyone contacting the FBI about sexual assault charges against Gore. The Secret Service has not yet responded to a similar request.

Gore was interviewed by Portland police officers last week for the first time regarding Hagerty’s allegations, which he has denied.
